Today we had the pleasure of speaking to Leah Bauer from Bauer Power Racing. She is an Ambassador for Ride Wisconsin and the third woman ever to compete in the Iron Dog Race held in Alaska.

Tell us a little about the Iron Dog Race for those who may be new to this sport?
The Iron Dog is the World's longest, toughest snowmobile race, spanning 2,600 miles across the rugged Alaskan wilderness. Racers compete on a 2-man team, each on their snowmobile, over 7 days. We'll be racing upwards of 500 miles per day. There are checkpoints and fuel stops along the way, and we will have layovers to work on the sleds.
What made you decide to be the third Pro woman ever to compete in the Iron Dog?
The Iron Dog has always been a bucket list item for me. Not many people get the opportunity to say they did it. I love racing cross country and this is the biggest, baddest race possible in my sport. I crave the adrenaline rush and am very competitive, which is where my drive comes from.
Have there been any challenges that you've faced over the years that you'd like to share?
Yes, my snowmobile started on fire.
If you could offer advice to someone based on what you wish you had known earlier, what would it be?
Start doing things earlier, when you're young if you can
Is there anything you’d recommend or advice you have for someone interested in getting started snowmobiling?
My advice is to never give up on something you want to do. If you don't at least try, you'll be disappointed that you never took the chance. Ask a lot of questions and do not be afraid to ask for help. The snowmobiling community is one big family and we want the sport to grow! You can usually find people that are very willing to help out.
